a number of與the number of

a number of意思是“許多”,相當于a lot of;the number of意思是“……的數(shù)目,……的數(shù)量 ”,作主語時謂語動詞用單數(shù)形式。如:

A number of people come here on vocation in summer.

許多人夏天來這里度假。

The number of the birds is decreasing every year.每年鳥的數(shù)量都在遞減。
